mysql problem

After updating to mandrake 10 ive encountered a few problems with MySql.

According to my services in the Control panel the MySql is running but when i check services (ctrl+Esc) It doesnt appear to be running.

It doesn't appear to be running as when i try to connect i get the error

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

error2002 is whe the database isnt running so why the MCC says running i dont know.

I am unable to start the database even directly on the command line using
/usr/bin/safe_mysqld start

any ideas on how else I can start the database or what the problem might be??

Try double checking your paths. On most linux distros mysql lives in /usr/local/mysql
if you see the folder there try
cd /usr/local/mysql
bin/mysqld_safe & -h hostname -u username -p

Another thing (i've had this happen before) try to issuse a locate for mysql.sock and once you find it cp it over to the directory that it says it can't be found in. HTH!

It's running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks for your ideas.

Unfortunaly the Mandrake upgrade deleted all the data in the tables so somewhat of a hollow victory. bugger!

That'll learn me to back up eh!
