You can't trigger a server side (PHP) function without communicating with the server; therefore, the answer is "no, you can't, and yes, they are" ...
But you can call a javascript function with "onclick" --- however, it won't get the server any information, unless it loads a new page ... so the real question is, what function, and what is it supposed to do?
Of course, if it's a javascript function, you need to go to another forum 😉, but since you say it "adds to the database", I'm guessing you just need to live with form submission .... 🙂
