display new record ID

HI, can anyone help?

I have a student databse with the unique field being the student ID which is auto-incremented.

when a new student enters their details on a form i want the student ID for the record that is about to be created to be shown on the form.

ie, if the last record in the student databse has an ID of 34, then the new student form will show "Student ID = 35" and the details entered in the form will append to this record ID.

I'm using Dreamweaver, mysql and php.

I can add a new record no probs using a form but i want their student ID to be displayed on the add new student form.

please help me, I've been trying for ages, and i'm new to this so all advice welcomed

SELECT (max(student_id) + 1)
FROM table

Of course, using a select max will only work if one person at a time enters the records.
