mod-rewrite fix?

I have a php program with cats....some are based on query results.... .htaccess for thos are as below.....however it doesnot translate into rewrite mode....and if it does, it does not return any query result for page 2 and onwards....

RewriteRule ^{search-(.)(.)(.).html$} search.php?query=$1&page=$2&mode=$3
RewriteRule ^search-(.)(.)(.).html$ search.php?query=$1&mode=$2&pid=$3

what if you try a

ReWriteEngine On

before the rewrite rules?

I have the
RewriteEngine on
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
RewriteRule ^{search-(.)(.)(.).html$} search.php?query=$1&page=$2&mode=$3
RewriteRule ^search-(.)(.)(.).html$ search.php?query=$1&mode=$2&pid=$3

The XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX part of the rewite code works but not these two lines...
