If safety is important, look at firebirsql or postgresql, which are better overall databases.
MySQL, however, is pretty hard to crash if you're just running simple queries. The danger I refer to is your data getting munged up by it's poor input range checking and such.
Best way to learn MySQL is play with a good GUI tool that will let you interface to it easily.
But databases are not simple enough to understand with no reading, you'll likley have to do some of that. I'd recommend Joe Celko's "Database design and theory" (not sure of the exact title) book.
