php3 to 4

I found some php3 files that I would like to use.
However, I cannot seem to get them to work on my php4 system.
I added and app type to the apache config but still nothing [it just shows the code on the webpage]
I figure I am missing something in my apache setup but is there a way to convert these files to php4?
my server is:
slackware 9.1
apache 1.3.28
php 4

Are the file extensions .php3 or .php

If they are .php3 then try changing them all to .php

they are all php3
however, if I change them won't I have to go through the code and change the references there?

I was always under the impression that PHP is backwards compatible.

it is but I believe the syntax changed.
I ended up renamiung all te files php and when into each page and changed a reference of php3 to php
