Hello.. I'm Onion (An Introduction)

Apparently Echo Lounge is for 'general chat and introductions', so I think I'll say hi..

I'm Chris, a web developer type from England. I joined yesterday (50ish posts already.. hmm..). I write sites in PHP all day long, and then play Unreal Tournament most of the evening, plus a bit more PHP if I've thought up something interesting to write.

I've been writing PHP professionally for the last 3 years having escaped from the nasty world of ASP before that, and Perl prior to that. In total I've been writing websites for 8 years.

I still use tables for layout.

I have a degree.

I have a cup of coffee, but its gone cold.

Me too! (well, the england bit) where are you from?

Almost the same except I do ASP stuff...

Yea, there are a lot of standards freaks out here... i'm one of them. The biggest one to look out for is goldbug though... he'll eat you alive if you let him see that 😉

Admittedly, I've got a current site I'm working on that has a table as a layout device (hangs head in shame -- I did confess to such in the summary attribute of the table 🙂 ). While it's true that CSS can do pretty much anything that "old school" design methods can... there are still a couple of fringe cases where it's currently impossible. Case in point: creating a footer that is pushed down by the content when it is > 1 page, but also sticks to bottom of page/screen when content is really short. There's a newer CSS hack floating (excuse the pun) around the 'net that addresses this.. but it uses a ton of extraneous div tags/spacer divs, which really isn't any better than one little table.

Anyways, sorry for taking this thread off topic in the off topic lounge 😃

I'm adam, i'm 23, i live in Oxford (england!) and currently work 1 day a week right now, having graduated two weeks ago, and at work I specialise in Lotus Notes/Domino development.
