Linux Mysql problem

I cannot log into mysql...

I am trying to do it the windows way, but it doesn't work...

can someone give me the command like mysql -u root password blah in windows to change root's password in mysql

also, what do i do to log into mysql once the password is set?

I've installed the .tgz for MYSQL 4.xx (i'm on slackware)...
