I have a left and right fixed-width, middle liquid layout that is driving me to the brink of posting too much this afternoon. I can't drop a table (yes, for tabular type data) into the middle column because it doesn't really have a proper width assigned to it. Ahhhhhhhhh...of course, it works on EVERYTHING EXCEPT M$.

Speaking about standards, we all know that using tables for design is a dumb idea (for many reasons, one of them being that search engines don't even bother looking at meta tags anymore.)

But I think that table-less design might be heading in the wrong direction. All these standards freaks are screaming about how we should all use CSS and XML and whatnot...but it's preventing non-computer -experts from creating websites...and trust me, these people can make okay-looking websites, not the best, but better than some of the crap that's on the web. So, we need to find a better way of doing things than just writing <div <div <div argh! We should be a little more liberal. Not all of us have to use XHTML Strict. Some of us like Transitional just fine. And yes, we will continue to use frames...get over it.

I completely agree with you on both counts. When I said "table-less" I really only meant tables for layout - tabular data is an exception. Additionally, there are times when tables make like much easier even when using the new standards.

I too am quite worried about the future of website design/building as these divs do make things much more difficult. Also, M$ is about to bring the browser to the OS and we can only imagine what kind of hell this is going to bring about.

My guess is that what works today, including tables layout, will work in 5 years from now and if it doesn't I'll be just as irritated as everybody else about it.

Now, is PHP5 going to force me to relearn all the stuff I know so far? This OO stuff? - am I about to be phased out from doing things too? I wouldn't claim to be great at working with PHP but I can build a damn good CMS or customized tracking system for document management on they fly - or am I on the verge of becoming a legacy?

There is a better way! Decent selectors eliminate the need for a huge fraction of those <div>s, and CSS3 selectors will eliminate the need for even more.

Only problem is that IE doesn't support selectors properly.
