Rounding

I am trying to round off a number to the next 10,000-100,000 or 1,000,000 depending on the number given.

In other words, I want the number to be rouned to the next HIGHER number that is divisible by 10. If I have 1,200 the number should be rounded to 2,000. If I have 22,300 the number should be rounded to 23,000. If I have 101,234 the number should be rounded to 102,000.

I am not sure if there is a built in function to do this (I know about round, but that won't work) or if it will take a custom script.

You could divide the number, round it and then times it up again.
eg

$num=1024;
$r_num=100;
$num=roun($num/$r_num)*$r_num;

That should round to the nearest 100 (1000 in this case).

Thanks, but it doesn't do what I am intending.

Yours is rounding to the nearest 100 even if it's lower than the original number.

I need to round to the next HIGHER 10,100,1000,10000,100000,1000000, etc... SO that when the number is divided by 10 I get even numbers with zeros on the end.

Example; 998,234 would be rounded to 1,000,000 and that divided by 10 would give me 100,000-200,000-300,000-400,000, etc...

Example; 3,234 would be rounded to 10,000 and that divided by 10 would give me 1,000-2,000-3,000-4,000, etc...

Example; 55,678 would be rounded to 100,000 and that divided by 10 would give me 10,000-20,000-30,000-40,000, etc...

That sort of thing.

I am using this for a graph program located here http://www.getpowered.net/lee/RChart/ChartPHP/test2.php and I need the numbers on the left to be in the 10,100,1000,10000,100000,1000000, vein depending on the max number given.

Well surely you could use the same priciple but with [man]ceil()[/man]?

Well, sorta. It does round up. I need it not only to round up, but round up to the nearest 10,100,1,000,10,000,100,000, etc.. depending on the number given and I can't have wild numbers like

998234
889345
756789
667888
556788
345555
etc...

It has to brake down to
100000
90000
80000
70000
etc..

Plus it has to take into account the size of the number. If I have a number that is over a million I don't want to round to the nearest 100 or 1,000, I want toround to the nearest 100,000. If the number is over 100,000 I don;t wan to round to the nearest 100,000, but to the nearest 10,000.

So yah ceil() helps, but is not quite what I need.

What are the specific criteria for how it should round up certain numbers? Are you trying to emulate log paper? Whatever the case you're going to have to define the specific conditions and create an algorithm which describes them.

not sure if this would work or not... the string->int conversions may jack it up....

1024 (using a small example)
$len = 4-2 = 2
$base = 1 . str_repeat('0', 3) = 1000
$round = 1 . str_repeat('0', 2) = 100 (rounding to the next 10's below
$rounded = 1024 + (100 - (1024 % 1000))
1024 + (100 - 24)
1024 + 76
$rounded = 1100

If the number given is over 10, it should round up to 20. If the given number is over 100 it should round up to 200. If the given number is over 1000 it should round up to 2000.If the given number is over 10000 it should round up to 20000. If the given number is over 100000 it should round up to 200000.If the given number is over 1000000 it should round up to 2000000. Etc...

tekky, your code is erroring out, I don't know why exactly(my server has error reporting turned off) except for the missing ";"'s, but it has given me an idea.

no problem, Its probably erroring out due to taking string functions to numbers and then adding strings to them and treating them as numbers again.... heh

Think I found a workable answer to the problem using both of your ideas.

$Max="998234";
$TheLen=strlen($Max);
if($TheLen==1)$RNum=1; 
if($TheLen==2)$RNum=10; 
if($TheLen==3)$RNum=100; 
if($TheLen==4)$RNum=1000; 
if($TheLen==5)$RNum=10000; 
if($TheLen==6)$RNum=100000; 
if($TheLen==7)$RNum=1000000; 
if($TheLen==8)$RNum=10000000; 
$Max=ceil($Max/$RNum)*$RNum;
$Tick=$Max/10;

Seems to work great so far.

Here is some help to get you rid of the endless "IF" statements:

$Max="998234"; 
$RNum = intval("1".str_repeat("0",strlen($Max)));
$Max=ceil($Max/$RNum)*$RNum; 
$Tick=$Max/10;

And don't you need to add one more zero, in your original code?:

$Max="998234"; 
$TheLen=strlen($Max); 
if($TheLen==1)$RNum=10;  

if($TheLen==2)$RNum=100;  

if($TheLen==3)$RNum=1000;  

if($TheLen==4)$RNum=10000;  

if($TheLen==5)$RNum=100000;
