Two websites off the same database?

Hi,
I am running a database-driven site on PHP/MySQL. I am wanting to setup a second site that will use the same database to generate its content, but under a different domain name of course. My understanding right now is that this is do-able using a TCP/IP connection on MySQL. I am still looking for more information, however. Has anyone done this sort of thing? Does it matter whether my second site is hosted with the same company or on the same server? Is there anything I should know?

You will only be able to do this if your hosting company (the one that has your database) allows access to the database from off of the machine. A lot of hosting companies restrict access to databases on there machines to only comming from localhost.

If you can access your database from a different machine then this is entirely possible, and easy. You just need to add the server address to your database connection and have a user that has the correct permissions and your done.

My host said that this would be fine, that I could use the TCP/IP connection in MySQL to access the database from a different site, and I think they mean one on a different server.

The organization I work for already has an e-store set up at one domain, and we are working on a new site that is primarily NOT a store but rather a content site. BUT, on this second site we want to offer some of our same products, just a small sub-set of what we offer on the other site. To keep things simple, we want to be able to pull the product info out of the same database as the main e-store site.
