Using Two Tables

Ok..this is frustrating me. Granted I'm new to PHP but have been playing with this for two days now and can't figure it out. I'm still learning so of course patience is a virtue.

Here's what I'm playing with currently. I have a DB with two tables (one is the main info table and the other contains transaction records for each user)

I can build the first table easily to display the list of people. However, what I can not seem to get is when I click on a name, the second table should populate will all those transactions associated with just that person.

I thought this was a relatively easy process but guess not.

Can someone lend some assistance?

setup a 2nd page, with a link on the first page based on the userID of each user (so when you print out the list of users, build an href out of each one passing the userID as an argument to the 2nd page)

then on the 2nd page

SELECT * FROM table2 WHERE userid=$userid

and go from there....

can be done that way, but using PHP you will have to reload the page atleast though... just through checks into the page for if a UID was submited, to display the users transactions

hmmm...that would seem not so good if the page has to be reloaded every time. How do you pass the value along as an href?

well you could send it like www.mysite.com/page.html?uid=$value

that would make it available in $_GET['uid']

and in regards to having to reload everytime -- thats due to the fact that PHP is server side only, it processes everything BEFORE the server ever displays it for the browser to see....

not familiar with the GET statement. will have to look into that one.

In the mean time, using the example above, how do I go about setting a variable from the first table? So, I would have a table with a list of first names. You click on a name and then it will write to a variable say $nm. That variable would get written out to a text box on the page.

as you can probably tell, I'm playing with variables and trying to learn their functionality in PHP. I can get the basic stuff now time to move up a notch. 😃

well doin that in PHP would require the names to be displayed in a fashion like...

then for your textbox

but that requires a page reload because its solely PHP

you could do it without reloading the page but that would require JScript, which I cant really help ya with 😉

note: thats psuedo'ish code, obviously it wont work as it is
