To avoid the directory listing on some server (if I have no control over the server set up, and if the server default set up is show the directory listing.), is it a good practice to have a index.html or index.php in the folder?

Having a index page as your main page is good, even though if the server is defaultly set up to show the directory listing.
This way a visitor will know what page to go to if they went to your directory listing page.

Yes it is.

I have a default index file in each folder, wich automatically transfers the user to the 'root' of my website, unless that directory is one with pages in it. (Say, the directory /../gif/ would result in a transfer to the root (/index.php), the directory /../content/Spain would result in loading /../content/spain/index.php
