php 4.2.2 vs. gd library 2.0 or later -- want to upgrade

Hi There,

I am running PHP 4.2.2. on a managed server. It says I have GD library 1.6.2 or higher, however I want to change that to 2.0.

Can anyone tell me if this is possible? And how? I've NEVER done something like this, and prefer safety first.

The reference I'm reading on boutelle.com seems to indicate that 2.0 only works on PHP 4.3.x, am I wrong?

I have searched the web and all the info I've found either applies to an older library, or is written with someone in mind who's actually done an installation before (definitely not me).
