How does this work?

Okay, I've seen things like this on pratically every/any php script, yet I don't exactly know how they do it..

How do they merge php and html together? Like, how would someone make a text box in html, and whatever they put in that text box effects the php?.. As in, Let's say you want to change a color of your background.. There's a text box, and you put in #ffffff
hit submit, and then it changes it to that colour? Know what I mean or? if you don't, then post a reply and I'll explain it a bit better.

To answer your example in simple terms:

switch($_POST['bgcolor']){

    $bgcolor = "FFFFFF";

    $bgcolor = "000000";

<body bgcolor="#<?php echo $bgcolor ?>">
<form method="post" action="<?php echo $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']?>">
<input type="text" name="bgcolor"><br>
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit">
</form>
</body>
</html>

The PHP switch statement first checks whether a value has been entered in the form textbox, then tests whether that value is allowed (case "white") and also gives a default value in case there are no matches.
