Hi!

I'd needed some overview what are the encryption possibilities in PHP. I know that there is the crypt/mcrypt + some other less known libraries doing this. The libraries offer different encryption / hashing functions but the more I read about the actual algorythms the more do I get confused.

Could someone please tell me which are the best (most secure) encryption algorythms that can be used from within php? Are there also some good websites about encryption which would simply compare algorythms and sort them like: this good, this better, this best?

almost everyone uses the md5() function to encrypt things.

md5 doesnt seem to be secure enough. I was thinking of 512+ encryption.. any hints?

If you are that focused on how secure something is.. look into SSL.

md5 isn't defined as encrytion. It's a hash. mcrypt is probably your best bet for working with something in php. Beyond that, you may want to look at an outside encryption to use with an exec function.

You might want to start by reading a Cryptography FAQ

After that, you could take yet another look at [man]mcrrypt[/man].

Note that it might be better to use [man]sha1/man for cryptographic hashes.
