A simple database script

Hi PHP-Pros!🙂

I was wondering if you guys could help me make a kind of script...
What I want to do, is to make a database/list on my personal homepage for hundreds of CDs, LPs, MDs, Tapes and so on. It should be a simple table with several columns. In the first column I want the band name, in the next I will put the album title, then genre, type of media, year, country (a small flag-.gif would be nice) and the last column for comments.

When one first accesses the page, the list should be displayed in the default way, which will be alphabetically by artist, and within an artist, chronologically.

NOW, up to this point, I could do this all by myself, simply making a static HTMLdoc, which I open to edit and enter a new CD each time.
BUT, what I want to have are buttons at the top which allow you to sort the list by album tilte, or by year, or by medium, or by country (by comments doesn't make sense ofcourse)... and then back to default.

In addition, it would be great to have a web-based form (perhaps password protected) to be able to easily enter new additions to the record collection.

I can imagine, that this is the point, where mySQL and PHP comes in.... which is where I am utterly helpless, as I have never made my own script before. :eek:

How difficult would this be? I hope you won't make me read fat PHP books before asking further questions 🙁

I have got quality webspace with PHP enable (probably the latest version) and 1 mySQL database.

I wont say read a book, as there is no point in wasting money on one... the online documentation is just as good if not better than most of the books out there.....

Well thanks a lot for those links, but I'm afraid it is far too hard for me. Remember I have NEVER programmed anything (I only know HTML). All I see on those pages are Egyptian hiroglyphs...

You were saying, that there might be something prewritten? What would this be called? What keywords should I search for?
Or does anybody know a script like this already?😕

If you ar enot too worried about people not using javascript, you coul dhave a look at google, search for 'sort table script' and find these:

But of course, you could use a database and PhP, which will work with any setup th euser has. It will depend on your service provider whether you can actually use these. Hotscipts might be a good place to look. Or just Google.

If you try to build it yourself, or get stuck in configuration, drop a line here. I do no tthink there will be many people keen on building you a site though..
