install of PHP 5 on production server

Hi There,

I have a managed server 500 miles away in San Josethat has php 4.2.2 I believe. I want ot upgrade to php5.0. I have NEVER done an install before -- and quite frankly it seems daunting. I have two questions:

Is there a step by step tutorial for someone who knows NOTHING about installing a program on Linux 8.0?

And BTW I would be uploading the file by FTP (Unless someone tells me a more direct way), and would be logging in via secure shell via Putty.

How likely is the install to be a success? This is a production server. I run mysql 4. I also know php.ini pretty well and realize there are some things I'd need to change. Also, i have a digital cert installed.

Thanks many times over for your assistance, I usually answer questions on the coding and sql forums but this is a completely new territory for me.

Better to get (or pay) a Linux/*nix techie to do it for you.

That said, installing PHP5.0.0 RC2 for a production server is a bad idea.
It would be better to wait for the stable release, and perhaps even for a few patches after that.

Incidentally, the PuTTy suite includes sftp.

OK, sounds good although I hope to find some tutorials on that.

the main reason I wanted to install the new PHP is for hte GD support, what about installing 4.3 (which has the latest GD package with it)? Again, I'd be doing this remotely with no experience.
