PHP with Flash or Java Applet

I am trying to design a client-side user interface to interact with a SQL database via PHP.

Which method do you recommend for a begineer like me ? Is it better to implement the user interface to handle PHP via Flash or JavaApplet ? 😕

PHP runs serverside so it can't really interact with the client programs...

You can send data (via xml might be best) to the browser and have a method to import the data into the application interface. Flash might be easier...
