Connecting To Oracle From PHP without Installing Oracle client on Linux

hi all,
i installed php 4.3.3 and apache on Red Hat Linux 9. i need to connect to oracle 9i from PHP on linux . for that is it necessary to install Oracle client(SQLNET) on the Linux server. Or can i able to connect to oracle through ODBC...Please Guide me on this topic.
