When working on a new project (as in a fun thing, not paid stuff) when do you tell people about it? As soon as you've thought of it? When theres something to see? When you get to a beta stage?
I like to immediately (even before development) tell my friends who I think will find the project useful. Then note their reaction. If they're excited, this gets me totally stoked and I jump on the project. If they are like, "dude, there's 10 other programs that do that." then I mope around and check out the other 10 and see what they did (and usually end up installing one of them).
I have a project that has had about 4 months (added up) of raw development time and its been running for 2 to 3 years now. This is all on the side, not work related type stuff. But at the same time, a good number of people are using it in several different ways so that has me pretty driven to keep the thing going...
