Sum of field from result?

Is it possible to find the sum of all values in a particular field from the results of a previous query? i.e. not running a SELECT SUM() query. If so, how would I go about doing this?

Loop through the result set and use PHP to sum the values.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to need a little more help here. I am trying to find the sum of all the values in the field 'gallery' for a result set, and equate it to a variable 'total' so I can echo it or compare it in an if/else statement.

Is there a tutorial out there that will teach me how to do this real quick? Thanks.
