Automatic Email

I know this is possible but I need to know how to go about it. I also know it's possible to do on my server because I have a third party script which does it.

My users register their email address when they register on my site.

The first thing I want to do is automatically send them a welcome email once they click the submit button on the registration page.

The users, once registered, can post messages on my site. Whenever a reply is given to one of their messages I want an email to be sent to them.

Can anyone please put me on the right track?
