[Resolved] [Resolved] eregi_replace HELP!!

I'm using this:

$phrase= eregi_replace("([[:space:]]|^)(the)(^|[[:space:]])", "*", $phrase);

so that the phrases :

im the master
the master
im the
imthemaster

will look like :

immaster
master
im*
imthemaster

but currently only the first & last phrases are being filtered correctly 😕

pls help!

nope not yet .
now its showing *** for the word "the" . I need only one asteric to appear.
it also adds asterics for each "t" "h" "e" :eek:

i need only the word "the" filtered only if its not within another word.

$phrase = preg_replace("/\\b ?the ?\\b/i",'*',$phrase);

I think the ereg* functions have something analogous to \b, but I generally use preg_* anyway.

dear sidney, for some reason your method doesn't work properly for the third line in the phrase( when there's a space before "the" ).

and as always Weedpackets preg_replace did work.

but i'm using "eregi_replace" cos someone told me that it's much quicker than preg_replace...

is that true?

For the most part they're pretty evenly matched; but any speed difference is in preg_replace's favour. That said, it's a pretty small difference for equivalent regexps (unless they're particularly long) and the main reasons I use them are those mentioned on the reference page for the [man]Regex[/man] functions.

yeah, especially when you take into consideration the "replace i" times..:rolleyes:
