Reducing files sizes through PHP

i have a page with allows people to upload pictures of themselves to the database but i want to be able to reduce the file sizes if they are too big

im using $file as the variable for the pictures being uploaded

please help

Theres a little known command in PHP that can reduce files in size by LOADS. [man]unlink/man.

Alternatively, try searching "thumbnail" on here, and use one of the millions of thumbnail generators, just with a bigger image size than thumbnails usually are.
