As a general rule, I use if when I need an either/or check, and I know there will never be another option. For example, on/off, yes/no, empty/not empty, etc.
I use switch for anything else. I might have to choose between 3 different options, and I might also need a choice for no match (default🙂. Plus, if another choice is needed to be added later, it's a simple matter of adding another case to the switch statement.
In your case, if you'll pardon the pun, I would use the switch statement.
