Wasn't that around the time of the winter olympics? That's more than likely why it's there. If you look carefully, you can see the "I" is made into the Olympic flame. While the winter Olympics may not be as big as the summer ones, they are still pretty big.

Hehe, yes I know it was for the olympics, see them cute medals round their little furry necks 🙂

I live in the Netherlands and often just type www.google.nl for their Dutch sister site and discovered that they even do these drawings for the local (Dutch) holidays.
Gee, what a fun job to be the guy (or gal) that has to make up and draw these things for a living 😃

Hmm.. I don't know who's boss and makes these decissions but somewhere someone in that company must have decided; Hey, we're a dull company and we want to attract a whole new market of internet users...what should we do??

Uhh... use green fonts on a purple background...nah! Put background music on our site...nah! Guess what... I have a superb idea! Lets make little drawings in our logo during local holidays! Yeah! We could use cute animals, fairies, dwarfs, goblins, puppies...

I bet that guy got a promotion!

hehe... Well, okay, I'm just being silly :p

Come, come, now; if Google were really for dummies, why do they all come and ask their $#&@#*$ questions here?

      [/O.T.]

      😃 😉

        ROTFLMAO!!!!

That really made me laugh. Thanks dale!

Personally, I like the things Google does. It shows that the company has a good sense of humor. I bet they have an awesome retention rate. Southwest Airlines has a similar policy of silliness, and they are one of the top-rated companies in the U.S. to work for.

Am I the only non-Google-worshipper here? (I'm positive someone will say yes...)

I understand the youthful urge to be different from everyone else. However, instead of calling us "Google-worshippers," perhaps you should simply explain why you don't like Google. Is it a deep-seated hatred of primary colors? You don't like fast searches? Companies that treat their employees like kings not on your favorites list? Please tell me... I'm very interested to know.

Google is great! I use it several times a day. It's the only searchengine I use and it is my browsers' start page.

I started this threat, not because I think google is a bad search engine. In my point of view it is the best. I just agreed with the text on the picture (not written by me).
I thought it was both funny and a bit true also. I don't mean to piss on Google and maybe I shouldn't have used the word "dummy's". It seems like written words can easily be put in another context then it was meant to be.

For all I care they can draw any animal in their logo as long as they find what I look for.

Anyway, I do like the discussion that it started..

So, google-worshippers and google-haters.... Can we all get along? 😉

                Greets, Tom

I hate it when I forget to put smilies in my messages....

Anyway, Google rarely has better results than most of the major search engines. It is fast and convenient, but I am willing to wait for better results. I find the alltheweb to be a very good search engine, and I like kart00 as well.

I didn't mean to phrase it as all of us being google-worshippers (because google-worshipping obviously isn't any sort of religion), but there are those out there who say: "Google is great. Google is great. Use Google. Use nothing but Google." And I say, "You ever tried this." They laugh. "Google is great. I can't wait for to get my very own official Google poster to put up on my wall."

My point is, there is more out there. I've had to have this argument countless times and I won't have it again....

In the meantime, to every person their own...

Accuracy of results aside, there is a point here. Some people definitely search more "thoroughly" than others. Been to Dogpile lately? Then there's my brother, the NT sysadmin, who might even still use Copernic. Was last I checked, anyway.

Google® has become a verb, even; it is quick, accurate, etc. Seems though, that if you want to get more than one view of the vista, there are still other options.

Thanks for the reminder, Merve. I doubt I'll be changing my habits, though ... 😉

It's not an urge to be different. I just have a lot of free time on my hands. I also have time to use different search engines...(I've got the NeedleSearch toolbar for Mozilla...that's helped loads.)

the only feature I wish google offered, that they don't, is search within results. That helps when I do a search and get thousands of responses and it's offen a better limiter then just adding words to the search.

but they do offer search within results. look at the blue footer, far left.

[edit]ok, my bad, they just add words to the search. yea, that would be great to have.[/edit]

Maybe I'm a little slow, but wouldn't that be the same thing? Searching within results or just adding words that is.

adding in keywords could potentially add results, i think. it's all to do with where the keywords are on the page. a real search within results page would actually search just within the results.. that would require caching the results for a rather long time, unless you wanted to do a search on the base terms, then search those again, all in one request...

microsoft offers this feature on technet. I'm pretty sure that the do it by searching the original search and then searching again within the results instead of caching the results. Because when you do it like 5 times in a row it gets rather slow, which leads me to believe they are acctually doing like 5 searches to build the list.

The other problem with just adding words to the original search is that it can reorder the list and since the more important words are the first ones I entered the list shouldn't be reorded.
