Email notification

Hey folks,
I've enjoyed browsing the forums & site, but am posting a quick question.

Can I make a simple php script to look at my pop3 mail account to see if there is unread mail and then put a notification of some kind on my website? FOr instance,

PHP looks for uread mail
Php decides whether to put a "no mail" gif or a "mail" gif up on the site.

Is this possible?
