Is it possible to set a password to a database? The user should be able to run the application ( i.e. add / delete / modify the entries / records in various tables), but should not directly open the database and manually open the tables and disturb the records in those tables.

well only you or the administrator should have access to databases through your hosting solution. but if you mean you only want certain users to be able to eg search a db through a php script you have written - i would add a user authentication system that could give different levels of access to different users.
