Default uploaded file permissions changeable?

I have an upload directory with full permissions on it (777), and whenever I upload a file to it, its given only rw permission for the owner which is 'wheel' and part of the group 'www'. I need to use this file in a bash script and because of the wimpy permissions it uploads as, I can't do anything with it. Is there a way to chmod a file immediatley after uploading it with exec() or something? Or is there a setting somewhere to change the default owner/group of a file after its uploaded.

Use php's [man]chmod[/man] or use backticks.

if(is_uploaded_file($file)) {
   `chmod 777 $file`;
}

Ok, I had already tried doing that. It completley ignores that line so I intentionally errored it to see if its not skipping it. Its actually reading the chmod command but ignores it. So I even went and added 'www' to be a member of the group that owns all the web directories. I'm looking into the possibility it may be a server setting somewhere to let uploaded files be at '755' rather than '500'. This is on a Mac OSX server and I've never really worked with one before, so far up to now its been just as typical as any other NIX server.

8 hours strong on this problem! Gotta get this thing figured out.

Ok, i got it. You were right, chmod command does work...when you have it in the right place! Doh! Also, learned another lesson here. I had to redirect my page to another before I could run my script on the file. So it had to be a 2 step process, 1) upload file, redirect 2) run the script.
