Navigating backwards in URL's

I knw how to go back one level in a URL using "../", but how would I go back say 2 or even 3 levels?

I have tried "../../../" but that didn't seem to work.

you sure this wont work??

i mde a file in my web server
http://localhost/1/1/1/index.php

with this in it

<a href="../../../index.php">go</a>

and in the status bar i got "http://localhost/index.php"

that should work as long as the structure is correct.

if you had,
http://somesite.com/index.php
and
http://somesite.com/folder1/folder2/folder3/index.php

and you tried,
http://somesite.com/folder1/folder2/folder3/../../../index.php
the resulting page would be
http://somesite.com/index.php
