Counter Script

I was bored today, and I haven't been here in a while so I wanted to come back with something worthwhile for the community, so I bangged out this little puppy.

It is a hit counter script with a couple of neat little features. It does ip logging and cookie based logging to ensure that the hit counter isn't driven up with refreshes. It can do both text based and image based counters.

Both types of logging can be individually turned on and off.

The directories for the data files and the images are configuarble.

The names of the data files are configurable.

It has a built in test page which you can view at http://www.enderswebdev.com/test/counter.php

A suggestion. Rather than relying on a programmer to edit the file and change TESTMODE, do a test to see if the file is loaded on its own, or included in a different file. If included, you can show just the counter whereever it's included in the page. If it's being loaded standalone, then automatically display the test page.

Another suggestion: Rather than zip it up and attach it, save it on your server as a .phps file and link us to it. That way, any changes you make to it can also be saved in the .phps file, and we can be sure that the code is up to date.

I made the change for displaying, or not displaying, the test page automatically.

I have also placed an example include page on my server and placed the phps file for both the include page and the counter.php file on my server. Just follow the link for the example in the first post and there are links at the bottom to view the source and view the include page. The include page has a link to view its source.

However I don't automatcially display the counter where it's included for a couple of reasons. First, the user can decide to use image or text based and this automation would remove that option. Second, if they turn on cookie logging then the counter has to be retrieved before anything is printed otherwise the setcookie function will not work.
