Accessing a local MySQL database?

I am interfacing a third-party piece of software with minimal support to a local MySQL database on my hard drive. I need to run a query in the third-party software against the database. The software has a wizard that requires four pieces of information to make the connection: the server name, the database name, the user name and the user password. The last three are not an issue, but I have been unable to make the connection, so I assume that I am not putting the right information in the server name. I have tried "localhost", "mysql", and the name that shows up in the properties for My Computer as the name of the computer. None of these works.

Does anyone have a suggestion for anything else I might try?

I have requested assistance from the software provider, but they are typically very slow in responding if they respond at all.

Are you sure mysql is up and running when you run the software?
Does the software require a webserver ... if so what are you using for this? Apache? IIS? What?
What os and ... what is the name of the software?

MySQL is running, so that is not the issue. I don't believe it needs a web server, but I have IIS installed. I do not know how to start it, though. How DO I start it?

I am running Windows XP Professional, and the software is an obscure package called FEDE.

In general, though, how would I name the server if it is my machine?

Right Click on 'My Computer', and Click Manage
Click the PLUS sign next to Services and Applications
Click the PLUS sign next to Internet Information Services
Click the PLUS next to Web Sites
Right Click on the Default Web Site, and click Start if it is clickable.

Your server should be localhost if running locally. Alternatively, you can try loading the IP address of the machine too.

BUT, I would suspect that isn't the issue. Setting up MySQL on WinXP can be tricky. I highly recommend you run the WinMySQL Admin tool that is distributed with the Windows MySQL program.

Thank you for the info on IIS. I did as you suggested. It was already running. I restarted it.

The question now is how do I get my browser to look locally instead of on the web? I tried typing the path in to my browser address bar, but that didn't work, even after I changed all the spaces to %20.

My pages are all PHP pages, and I downloaded PHP as well. Do I need that running, too?

As for setting up MySQL, I did use WinMySQL to set it up. I have built the database, and I can run queries against it using MySQLControlCenter, which is great. I just can't seem to connect to it using FEDE.

Yeah, you need PHP running on the machine as well, so your IIS will know how to parse the php pages. There is a bit to it, so get a cup of coffee, and dig into the PHP install instructions. There is some configuring to be done in the php.ini file (which is in c:\windows) and in the IIS. It has been almost 2 years since I set mine up, and since I got it running, I haven't looked at it since, but if you need help, I will be more than happy to try to help out where I can.

Once you are all done, you should be able to call the page with

http://localhost
