You may want to take a look at Creating Applications with Mozilla by O'Reilly. That link is the HTML version, completely accessible via the web. You might also want to take a look at this article. I'm not sure how much you already know, but it looks like you better get familiar with CSS, XML, DTD's, and RDF. Basically, immerse yourself in the XML universe, and XUL should be fairly easy to grasp.
