Changing a date format

Is there a way to re-format a date variable that has already been reformatted from a Mysql select statement?

Example:

$ship_date = "20040601";

Is there a way to re-format that variable to say look like a user friendly date?

Example:

June 02, 2004

you can use [man]strtotime[/man] to turn the date into a unix timestamp, and then using [man]date[/man] you can turn it into just about any format you want.

I guess I don't have a grasp on dates very well. I had to format the time stamp from the database to "20040531" ($ship_date = "20040531") so I could subtract that format from today’s date to get the time between those dates. Is there a way I can take "20040531" and change it to May 31, 2004.

Not sure this makes sense.

$timestamp = strtotime("20040531");

echo date("F d, Y", $timestamp);

that should do the trick

And what if I had to do that in italian language, so with the months in italian ?

have a look at set_locale .
that should change certain settings, i think dates are one of them.
