I have to announce to the House that during the night and the early hours of this morning the first of a series of landings in force upon the European continent has taken place......An immense armada of upwards of 4000 ships, together with several thousand smaller craft, crossed the Channel. Massed airborne landings have been successfully effected behind the enemy lines, and landings on the beaches are proceeding at various points....everything is proceeding according to plan.

Watched a lot of the memorial stuff on TV earlier today. The quote which really struck me was from a Canadian veterain from one of the first waves. I can't remember it word for word but it was along the lines of "It wasn't about heroism, we were just doing our jobs".

If there are any veterains on this board, thankyou.

Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force, Wednesday, June 7 --Allied forces continued landings on the northern French coast throughout yesterday and "satisfactory progress was made," headquarters announced today.

United States Rangers and British Commandos formed part of the assault forces, the third invasion bulletin said.

"No further attempt at interference with our sea-borne landing was made by enemy naval forces," it continued.

"Those coastal batteries still in action are being bombarded by Allied warships," the bulletin said.

"At twilight yesterday and for the fourth time during the day Allied heavy bombers attacked rail communications and bridges in the general battle area, and "there was increased air opposition," the announcement added.
