Gnome or KDE?

Which do you all reckon is better and why?

KDE, because it's what all the cool guys seem to use 😃

I started off with Gnome because that's what Redhat defaults to but one of my friends said that he used KDE so I tried it. I found it very easy to customize and just generally got on with it. However, when I first came to Linux I was very scared and didn't want to change anything so I never really tried with Gnome ... hey ... I guess I've never really tried Gnome then.

I bounce back and forth on occasion between Gnome, KDE, Enlightenment, Window Maker, and right now, Fluxbox. But I always just go back to KDE eventually.

Personally, I just right-click and pull down to "Change Desktop Background"

I don't know much about KDE. I tried a few times, but those icons drove me up the wall. I've been using Gnome for 4 years and love it. Now I'm using the metacity RH version, just because it's easier to manage than going Ximian.

TBH, as RH tries to cater to the MS converts, I'll probably be switching. So please disregard all of my comments anyway 😃

I've never seen a garden KDE.

KDE looks nicer to me, .. but for file browsing it's like an html browser.

File browsing on Gnome feels more like you are using an o/s, and not a web page.

overall though, KDE is what i prefer.

I take it you haven't played with the newest version of Gnome, in which every folder opened is opened in a new window...
You can shut this off, but it's not easy. Takes a lot of searching and hacking...

The beauty of either of these is that you can customize the file browsing to what you want it to feel like. So, maybe by default, KDE is web-browser-ish, but it can be completely manipulated to what you like.

I prefer KDE over Gnome, but I rarely use either (I'm a Windows person). However, KDE seems much easier to use for me, so I like it better (and use it for my FreeBSD box).

Yeah, and that's irking me. Upgrading was a long process, and something written in 2004 defaults to Win95ish behavior? ... not that I use the file browser that much, anyway. I started BSD on terminal and still spend a lot of time there, as so many of us do.

You can shut this off, but it's not easy. Takes a lot of searching and hacking...

Open Applications => System Tools => Configuration Editor
Go to the /apps/nautilus/preferences key. Check the always_use_browser checkbox, then restart Gnome.

I used kde for a few years but dropped it in favor of fluxbox. The only thing I miss about kde is konqueror's search shortcuts, and I'm not about to install the kde stuff just for that...
