using data from a .txt flatfile

i have been messing with this for a couple days, i got some info off the forum but i just can't grasp it .. can someone give me an example?? or point me in the right direction to see one.

i need to extract information from a txt file and use it in caculations

the data is stored like this

(line 1) 5|7|0|1|3|
(line 2) 4|6|1|3|6|
(line 3) 1|8|2|3|9|

i need to use these numbers in caculations in a php script .. but i also need to add across lines 5+4+1, 7+6+8, 0+1+2 and so on.

but .i also need to caculate new entries as they are added.

there's got to be a solution. i know it's complicated but any help is greatly appreciated.

That can be easily be done by reading in each line of the text file, exploding each line on "|", and then add each element to a total variable.
