Interesting problem.

I am getting an interesting problem.
I have windows 2000 running with SII and php4 and whatever the latest mysql is, I don't remember. 3 somthign I think.
never had a problem with those.

I have a script that I am running that is basicly just a news posting script, access the database and post a message edit and delete them after words and so on. works beautifuly. I uploaded it to my webserver and it doesn't work. it works the first time you do anything and then it won't log into the database anymore. I ws wondering if it is a session problem, I am so lost, been working on it for a few hours now. if any of you guys gets some time to run through it and let me know if you find anything, I would love it. Thanks.

as a side note, if someone does go through the code, it would be nice if you could also point out any other mistakes since I am rather new to this.

Sorry I typed that wrong, it is IIS - Internet Information services, it is a webserver.

The error I get is Whatever I put after the i.e.
mysql_select_db("jbreit_events", $db) or dir("error connecting to database");

in that instance I get the error, "error connecting to database". it just wont select the datebase, I thought it may have somthing to do with the sessions, but it connects fine it just wont open the database. and it works on my computer in the testing server, but not on the actuall webserver.

This has nothing to do with sessions. It's that your computer cannot physically connect to your mysql server.

Check that you have actually connected to the server:

<?php 
mysql_connect($yourhost,$username,$password) or die("Cannot connect");
?>

Does this come up with any errors?

Check that the database (not the server, the actual database itself) does actually exist and that you have access to it.

There are no errors connecting to the mysql server, I can access the data from other svripts, and even from this one the first time I log in, and then after it refreshes the page I can't which is what made me think it was a session not supplying the right username and password, but there is still no error connecting to the server only selecting that database. and the wierdest part is that it works fine on my home computer, and not on the web server.

Can you post the code you're using to connect to the DB server? If you're using variables for host, username and password can you post where these are getting set also.

Right, the session problem is correct, in the branch ($GET['do']=='main') you don't do a session start so the $SESSION array will be empty. Another problem with your use of sessions is that you must process them before you output anything to the browser. In this case it's probably going to be easiest to completely divide your logic from your display. Process all your logic at the top of the page before anything is displayed, setting variables to control the display later on in the script.

One major point which is not related to PHP is your styling. Man, you need to check out CSS that kind of in-line styling is appalling. Below are a few links with more information on CSS, how to use it and how it can help you.

W3C CSS Homepage - The definative homepage for CSS. It contains the Official Spec and many helpfull links. It may be a little daunting when you first go there (and to be honest, probably isn't the best place to start) but it'll prove invaluable latter down the line.
W3Schools CSS Tutorial - A much nicer place to start, explains what CSS is, why it's usefull and gives you a nice start in it.
Maxdesign - Loads of usefull CSS tutorials
A List Apart - Loads of helpfull webdesign articles
CSS Zen Garden - Proof of how powerfull it can be.
