Hello,

I wonder where the article requests forum is. Disappeared ? Stolen ? 🙂.

JM

It was getting so little traffic, I closed it.

You closed it because the forum wasn't getting much traffic ??? It's a very weird decision specially when a community is supposed to be focused on users and feedback.

It was a good way to exchange ideas about future articles.

I hope the other forums won't get the same treatment,
      JM

I disagree. There hadn't been any new posts there for at least 3 or 4 months. All the other forums get far more traffic, even the tools section which doesn't get much.

Okay but why close a forum that doesn't bother anyone ? It should be at least accessible for the archives. I thought an article requests forum was a great idea, specially for the future authors and the readers. I don't understand why they closed it when they could just keep it somewhere else. If they closed the forum they could also decide to remove most of the articles as some of them are obsolete. Or they could decided to remove the one that readers haven't read since 6 months...

          Archiving archiving archiving.

I'm not opposed to opening it again, but I can't see leaving it open when people posted only a few times per year in that forum. Actually, the last post was 3-26-2003. So, it's been over a year since anyone posted.

If an article request forum wasn't getting enough traffic (which I can understand) then prehapse an article request thread as a sticky in this forum? Then everybody's 🙂

                Great idea!

I'll wait for everyone to reply first. Thanks.

Last post was 3-26-2003 but what about the last view ? I remember visiting the forum this year.

Let's explain why I'm a bit pissed of 🙂. Once upon a time...

I began to write an article about developing a multilingual website. During my searches for other tutorials and references, I stumbled on the article requests forum and... A request for such an article ! Even if I didn't find the time to finish the article, I was glad to think that somewhere there was someone expecting it even if I had to post in 2029 that my article was finally finished 🙂.

Yes stick the multilingual website article request thread 🙂.

Seriously I'm not sure it would be the best solution as we wouldn't be able to talk about the articles. 1 thread for 1 topic, using a sticking thread for multiple articles, so multiple topics wouldn't be as practical as a forum dedicated to article requests, even if the last post was in 2003 😃.

In fact I don't really like when websites are closed, so forums, pages... It's like if something was vanishing from the web and there was no way to get it back. Imagine what would be Usenet 2004 without the Google Groups, I couldn't live without it. Even if some groups don't exist anymore or some of them are more dead that the PHP Builder article requests one 🙂.

For example on PHP France we have a few forums, nothing compared to PHP Builder, and some of them are as dead as a squashed fly... But we didn't close them, just for archiving, in case someone needs it. For example it can be useful if someone is looking for an information on the forums, searching for multilingual on the forums, we won't find anymore the wonderful threads of the article requests forum.

Okay, how much for reopening the forum ? :p.

23 gazillion USD. I've opened it; you can address the check to me personally 😉

I can't promise it will stay that way but, if it's serving a purpose, I will give it another chance.

I'll check that forum when people submit articles, to see if it's a result of that forum. This way I can get a better idea if it's serving a purpose.

One other reason I closed it is, people were linking to other sites as the answer to a request. That's fine if the question was in a help forum and was "how do I <whatever>", but that wasn't the case. It was a request for an article on PHPB.

Looks like I was wrong about the last post date -- the last was in March this year. But it appears to have been the only one in the past year.

It doesn't really matter, everyone make mistakes 🙂. However you were right, the forum is dead meat .

I hope I will find some time to work on my article again, I thought about simplifying my method for example. I also noticed a few articles about developing a multilingual website were published in the last few months, on php|architect for example.

Thanks and may the forum be with you,
                          JM
