images don't show

Web Environment: Apache 1.3.6, PHP 4.3.6, MySQL 3.23.49

My Question

For some reason, under my web development environment images won't appear on my websites. The placeholder and alt text show, but not the image.

This is something that has just started to happen. Previously all was well, and I have not touched the above set-up. When I upload the php pages to the remote server, the images show as they should, so there is nothing wrong with the code.

I have tested a simple html page outside of my web development environment and the image shows up as they should, but they won't under my local web environment.

Anyone know why this happens? I'd appreciate a solution...

Check that your PHP scripts are using exactly the same path to the images directory on both the local and remote web servers.

It sounds like you have made an inadvertent directory change on either the local or remote web server, but your PHP code is still looking in the original directory.

Consider using the following in your paths:

$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST']

dirname()

Check the PHP manual for specifics.

Thanks but I do have the correct path on both. I use a folder called images on both local and remote servers in the same place in the document root.

I also use

include $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/foo/foo.php' for all included files.

It all works remotely but the images don't work locally. It's probably something minor, but I can't see it...

I'm still guessing that it's a difference in directory paths... by chance, have you created a simple PHP script that has a harded coded path to an image and then used <img src=...> to display it in your browswer. Perhaps we are not seeing the error because of the assumptiong that $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] is containing what we think it's containing.

The key is to use a hardcoded value for the path.

Test the script on both your local and remote web servers.

You could also echo $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'];
on both your local and remote web servers to see what they have been assigned.

Let's see how it goes.

I've been looking for a solution including working with your suggestions, but have only just found the problem now. It appears that I can't view an image that has a numeral in the filename.

i.e. - dog01.jpg as opposed to dog.jpg

I've used images with a numbering system for years now, so do you have any idea why this is occurring now?

But anyhow, thanks for your help on the matter...

When you say that you can't view images that have an image in the filename, what is the error that you're getting (if any)? Are you saying it doesn't get displayed, the browser can't find the path, MySQL (if that's what you're using) can't locate the record?

Unless you have something in your code negating the display of images that contain a numeral (and I can't imagine why you would off the top of my head), there isn't a reason why this should be an obstacle.

And are you sure it's the number that's a problem as opposed to an incorrect file extension (using dog1.jpp instead of dog1.jpg)?
