Using Curl to log in

I want to write a script that logs in to a page and fetches the required info. I have seen the examples on curl's home page. They worked for some 'easy' login pages. In my case the page seems to be easy so. But I couldnt handle it. Let me be more spesific:
The page has a form which includes a hidden text input named '__VIEWSTATE' and a value.
1st question : Do I need to post this info too?
The submit button of the form has an event handler like this:
onclick="if (typeof(Page_ClientValidate) == 'function') Page_ClientValidate(); "
I guess this function validates if the form is submitted from a browser window.
2nd question: This means that I cant login to the site with curl?

even though they use javascript validation on the form, you can still use curl to login, using js to validate forms sometimes can mean a little less error checking code on the receiving page. i would recommend you post every piece of information that appears on the submit form.
