how can i go back to the origin format?

I transfered the newline(\r\n) to '*' in order to store into only single line on a file

i.e
$thisdescription="aaaaaa¡¯bbbbbb¡¯ccccccccc¡¯";

but how can i go back to the origin format?like:
aaaaaa
bbbbbb
ccccccccc

I've tried the following command but failed

$description=preg_replace('/¡¯/','\r\n',$thisdescription);

$description=str_replace('¯',"\n",$thisdescription);

"double quotes" on "\n" should do the trick
