XML issue...

We're using a content manager on our site called Article Manager.

Our site has php pages.

We've developed a template in Article Manager that will generate an XML/ RSS page containing the latest article links.

Problem: When Article Manager attempts to 'publish' the page, (apparantly) the php engine attempts to parse the page, resulting in an error like this:

Parse error: parse error in /usr/u/home/mysite/artman/publish/temp_1086821755.php on line 3

Apparently, the <? at the top of the xml page causes php to attempt to parse the page.

Question: Is there a 'switch' we can code at the top of our template so that php ignores the page?

To begin your PHP blocks, are you using:

<?php

or are you using:

If you are using XML with your PHP, your PHP code needs to begin with <?php.

To have impact though, you need to also modify your PHP.ini file. Set the following:

short_open_tag = Off

It sounds like it is currently set to:

short_open_tag = On

My host is telling me this change would be a "global" change on the server, affecting all users.

What impact might this change have on other users, good or bad?

If they're using <? to open their PHP blocks instead of <?php, they won't be interpreted as PHP blocks any more, but just as more plain text. Very Bad.

I presume your problem is a PHP script that generates XML - rather than just a static XML file; I presume this because I doubt your host would have configured the server to treat any old XML file as a PHP script. That being the case, the usual workaround is to output the XML declaration from within PHP.

<?
echo '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>';
//blahblah as per usual

What a pity it is that the XML development group didn't know about PHP when they came up with this syntax 🙂

Correct. When our php content manager trys to compiles an xml template, it chokes on the xml code...

So...

Are you saying instead of reconfiguring the php.ini
I should use this in my template header?

<? 
echo '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>';

Instead of :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

???

I tried that (above) and still getting a php parse error (php is trying to interpret the xml file).
