All right... before any of you say anything to me about using IE... eat my shorts! I'm a developer, and if I have to develop a site to work in IE, I have to use it.
Anyway, here's the lowdown: When I go to a site by typing in the URL (let's just say gmail.google.com, since that's the last time it happened), I get shunted to a search page. That page is:
http://search.lycos.com/default.asp?src=clear&loc=top50&query=gmail
So, I type it in again. And voila, the page opens like it's supposed to! This happens a LOT. So, of course, after grumbling about "damned spyware," etc, I run my spyware checkers -- spybot, adaware, hijaak, and SpywareBlaster.
Nothing.
So I look in the Registry for Lycos... Nope. I delete my cookies and empty the History and Temp file folders. Still doesn't do it.
Hijaak shows me all of the ActiveX components (which is how I finally fixed my ad popup problem), but I can find nothing in there about Lycos either.
So what the hell is causing this??? It's not my default search page -- I have changed that to "don't search from the address bar" in IE.
Anyone have this problem? I think it's related to the auto-search function when explorer doesn't recognize the URL... but 1) why does this happen when I turn it off in the options, and 2) why does it happen even if I type in a real url?
