Select only last record from a table

I have a problem that I just can't seem to work out.

I am fairly new to PHP so sorry if this question seems lame.

I am trying to work out what the MySQL query would be to only retreive the last row in a table.

There is an auto number assigned whenever a new record is entered and I need to determine what that number is.

use ORDER BY to make it first then use LIMIT 1

use LAST_INSERT_ID()
