how long to restore a dump?

I have a 50MB mysql dump file that I'm trying to restore. I have 2 programs I've been trying with. My favorite, which is pretty fast for viewing and editing data (imo) is mysql-front 3. However, when I try uploading the dump with it, I get a lot of errors regarding tables not existing.

So, then I try dbmanager from dbtools. So far so good I guess, but it seems like there is a problem. This program has always been pretty slow in general for me. ie, when you are trying to navigate the tables and you select another table or change views it takes a really long time to update. Anyways, I've been "uploading" this dump for over 4 hours now and it looks as though it's only uploaded about half of 184 tables.

Is this normal, cause this is killin me. Do you guys recommed a better mysql management tool. dbmanager is free and that's nice, but it's what I like to call BOP (buggy on purpose) because it seems so slow all the time.

mysql-front seems like a pretty good program for the most part but I have no clue why I'm unable to restore a dump with it/why it's givin me all these errors. This program is fast over all for browsing tables and changing views (object browser, data view, sql editor) but sometimes it crashes when I delete tables and I have to end the process or I get a never ending loop of crash erros and windows error reporting.

So, how long should it be taking to restore a dump like mine, 50MB 184 tables.
I have an average of 15-20kb upload speed with my dsl.

Is there a better program to use than what I'm using for mysql dbase management? Maybe something American coded?

How about mysql?

from the shell or execute():

upload the file to the server...takes however long your connection takes.

Then

mysql -uUser -pPassword myDatabase < pathto/myDumpfile.sql

Should restore 50 mg file to myDatabase on a fast server in less than 15 seconds.

Finally about 4 and a half hours later it just finished uploading the dump with the program.

I'm not that savvy, could you write out step by step what I have to do? By uploading the dump to the server, you just mean to my website right? I'm not fully understanding because I've only ever used a gui program or phpmyadmin.

Sorry, that "writing out what to do" would be a painful exercise in frustration for both you and me.

First find out this info:

Do you have 'SHELL' access to your server...can you use a terminal type program to enter unix/linux commands?

Then find the appropriate program for accessing you account, such as PUTTY (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/)

Then find someone geographically nearby who can help you by standing over your shoulder as you try to access your account

Or experiment on your own (carefully), using the many unix or linux primers available on the web.

FTP a file and try to find it in a directory via PUTTY.

Then move the FTP'd file to your route directory.

Try accessing mysql through PUTTY.

Once you've mastered these skills, you can easily type in

mysql -uUser -pPassword myDatabase < pathto/myDumpfile.sql

And restore your whole database in a heartbeat.

Okay, I think I've done this a couple times before with an mssql server and command based osql.exe

My isp doesn't give that type of access, so I guess I'm SOL in that regards.

Thanks for the help. I setup a local host and was able to do that stuff just fine. When I'm actually done fixin my dbase I'll have to spend the 4.5 hours uploading to my hosts server.

Just for tests though, I tried loading restoring the dump with mysql-front and it was looking like it was gonna take the same time even on the same computer. Why does it take so long? That just doesn't seem right.

I'm revisiting my problem and I'm having trouble restoring a dump.

after loggin in mysql -u root

I use the upgrade dbase, then type

upgrade < c:\upgrade.sql

that returns an error, 1102: incorrect database name "pgrade.sql"
