Splitting string up at certain charactors

I know it's possible with java, and most likely php. What the fuction did in java was take a string and split it up at a certain charactor and make an array out of the string. It's been awhile so I can't remember what it's called.

Could someone point me towards a tutorial or show me how it works in php?
