[Resolved] preg equivalents of ereg

can someone give me the equivalent preg_replace expressions of the following ereg expressions:

apple([[:alpha:]]*) - so that anything like apple or even apples is matched

domain[.] - so that only words like "domain." are matched

&#([0-9]{2,3}); - to match html chracters with ascii value codes

I think...haven't tested. In PCRE you need to enclose the part you want to replace with parentheses. These can be nested and then referenced in the 'replace' part as \1 or $1.

You can also use

/apple([[:alpha:]]*)/
/domain[.]/
/&#([0-9]{2,3});/

although Shrike's versions are preferable (except for the first one: \w matches digits and underscores as well as letters). In fact, the second one of Shrike's will work in ereg as well (and probably work a wee bit faster); and in both you could use [a-z] instead of [[:alpha:]].

\w is a-z, \d is digits, underscores don't have a character class afaik.
