searches on fields with apostrophes?

I have a mysql db that I need users to be able to search on.
Right now I parse out any apostrophes (single quotes and double quotes)

However, grammatically the descriptions are now incorrect.

For example if they search for the club name and it is

John's Fishing Club

It gets entered as Johns Fishing Club

Is there a way to do this and leave in the apostrophes or even quotes if they want to use them in say a description?

I know a lot of online stores allow quotes in the descriptions and was wondering how they do it.

If magic_quotes_gpc is set to on, then single quotes would be automatically escaped.

If not, you can escape them using addslashes(), or by doubling them.

I'm not sure what magic_quotes_gpc is but I'll look it up and the addslashes command
